I believe reports of SST effect on turkeys although seems incredulous from my experience to use 9s on anything other than museum specimens. Appreciate opinions of the best SST size for waterfowl at the farthest edge of decoys---5s or 6s? In days of lead my preference was 4s.

I'd be certain my dental insurance coverage was in force before I started shooting ducks with that stuff.

Remember the old saw that says drop down two sizes for steel.
So just up two sizes for TSS and keep the velocity UP!!!
Mike
So for me, #6 lead for ducks, #4 steel for ducks, and #8 for TSS
But for you, #4, #2, and #6

I haven't shot a lot of ducks with TSS, but I have killed a few and other hunters in my group have killed more. We used #8, and I can't see any reason to go any larger. Stan, shot in the breast was not an issue; got complete penetration on all hits.
The biggest problem I saw with it was that patterns were just too tight. Even with a cylinder choke, I got 87% inside a 30" circle at 40 yards. I had to put steel in one barrel for closer shots and use the tungsten loads only for longer shots.
There are some recipes for duplexing tss with steel that I would try if I were ever in a position to do a lot of duck hunting. I'm not sure that tss alone is a very practical duck load.

TSS or whatever you want to call it is no God weapon. I shudder to think people who think it will give you leads killing range with even extra. Most duck hunters should be range limited to 30-35 yards, 25 yards would be better. To give them a shell that gives them hope for killing ducks at 40, 50 or 60 yards will just encourage many to exceeded their abilities.
It patterns tight as Hell from what I understand. Then you have two choices. Use a more open choke for better closer patterns or stick with tight chokes and be very handicapped on all near shots. So while it does penetrate well, your working pattern will be limited one way or another. Are you going to have large enough effective patterns to hit ducks or geese at range? Will you put enough shot into a vital area to kill the bird quickly? A bird which flies 200 yards before bleeding out to die will never be recovered by 99% of hunters.
Most know my views on Turkeys and I have no problem with people using TSS on them. But a wounded Turkey has a better chance for recovery if tracked. A duck, which flies away has almost none.

I know a man who shoots woodies in the timber with a 28 ga. shooting 9/16 oz. of TSS 9's at 1400 fps. It works well for him. Knowing the limitation of ammo applies to steel, lead, etc. and not just TSS. Gil

No problem with shot staying in the duck meat, Gil? Just hard for me to imagine that all of it passes completely through.

From what I gather, at 1400 fps, all pass through. I'll double check. Gil

According to the individual, he has shot woodies in the timber with both #9.5 TSS (420/Oz.) and #10 (500/oz.) He has not found shot in the meat. Gil
