Just picked up a very nice Winchester Mdl 21 Trap vent rib. Has the tight full barrel on the right and the mod on the left. Now I know Winchester would do almost whatever a customer specified, but what would be the reasoning for going from the traditional more open right barrel to the tight barrel on the right hand side. Figured I would get plenty of opinions, and is there anything written by Winchester for doing so? I have seen several Mdl 21 Traps configured this same way. JW

Might have been set up for a left handed shooter, triggers now reversed. I bought a .410 which was set up full on right side and cup on left side. Triggered were bent for left handed shooter and reversed, front trigger fired the left barrel. It was a Crescent double so not a custom gun. Took five minutes to reverse triggers and rebend them for right handed shooter.

Some trap shooters I knew shot doubles using a tighter first barrel and more open second barrel. I guess they figured a full choke on the straight away bird was ok and having a open second barrel for the angles gave them a great pattern. As you may know a few Trap shooters can have odd ideas. Knew one who bent their barel up like a banana so he could shoot under the bird and the bent barrel would raise his point of impact enough to hit the bird. Like I said a few odd fellows over in Trap.

Can we assume the front trigger fires the right barrel? Could be for incoming driven birds, tighter barrel for first shot away, more open for second, closer shot...

It's a selectable single trigger.

John Olin had his guns set up to shoot left barrel 1st, sounds like this gun.

Let's approach the question with another question.............what was the overpowering reason for the front trigger to fire the right barrel on the first S x S guns? Or, why was it deemed more important that the right barrel be the more open choked? What wasn't the front trigger configured to fire the left barrel first, and have the more open choke in it?

I see no plausible explanation for it either way. I can shoot the rear trigger first and shift to the front just as easily as vice versa. Makes no diff to me. In fact, when shooting S x Ss at doves I very often do that, to take an incoming pair far out on the first bird, then take the second before it passes me. A true pair on incoming doves is very satisfying.

The only thing I would stipulate is that I would want all of mine were choked in the same manner, not the same constrictions in every gun, but having the more open barrel on the same side for all of them........whichever side that was on.

I have two Parker�s reverse choked, both letter as being ordered that way. Also have a Birmingham Hammer gun reverse choked.

Only explanation is the buyers wanted the guns choked tighter on the right.

Boats

Many trap and box bird shooters had their guns set up to fire the left barrel first as it is believed that the left barrel comes in to your face where as the right goes away. Therefore it is easier to stay in the gun when you shoot the left barrel first.

My M21 16ga is a Trap grade but not a Trap gun, and it's reverse choked with Mod in the right and Cyl in the left. When I got it the triggers had been reversed and since they were not re-bent they stuck out funny. Somebody really wanted the front trigger to fire the open barrel. They were simple to switch back to original, the letter on the gun lists grade, stock dimensions and the individual for whom it was made but nothing about chokes.
