Got some more pictures!

I'll get the bigger studio out maybe this weekend to get the whole thing in a shot.

From what I can find, this seems to have been sold by the luxury retailer, Coirier of Clermont-Ferrand, France. It seems he may have had a shop in paris later.

It was likely made by the award winning, Massardier-Poulat of Saint Étienne, France; or maybe just the barrel was made by him. I do not know that the B★, A,G or MA marks are!

Hopefully someone can give me more info on any of these people!

Click some of the pictures for link to larger version.

I'm kind of posted out. But a Saint-Etienne gunmaker is always of interest. I'll look around maybe this weekend and see what can turn up (and it sounds like you've already done some research). (Courier de Clermont-Ferrand will be the retailer - armurier - or possibly the owner since the retailer is normally inscribed just in front of the trigger guard, at least for post 1900 guns).

In the meantime, Here is a Massardier from Naturabuy.com

https://www.naturabuy.fr/Fusil-saint-Etienne-calibre-16-canon-76-cm-damas-item-4739964.html

Provenance : collection Albert Grosjean, Me Jean-Louis Picard, Hôtel Drouot, 1993, n° 69.
Médaille de bronze S.E.I.N.

Catalog entry for the 1867 Paris Universelle exposition:

1835 Revue Industrielle de Saint-Etienne.
Wonder of the Berthon in the hyphenated names is the Berthon of "Gerest-Berthon"? He he he..these Stephanois Canoniers seem to be an incestuous bunch.

I have no info but I do have some wows.

That is beautiful.

How does a gun like this stay looking as new as the day it was made. And I thought my pinfire was in excellent condition. Wow.

Aaron,

I don't know what pinfires usually bring, but based on the auction estimates it looks like you got a very good deal...

I can't spot even any vintage French proofmarks on that gun. The modern ones don't show up until 1897.

Is it possible that it is of Belgian origin and merely sold in France?

It’s got this St Etienne proof in the dark oval on the barrel.

Their poor quality of the pictures in the auction listing I think helped me out a lot.

And my friend actually worked on this particular gun on behalf of the person whose widow was selling it. (Protect stock and metal and stuff, no repair work) and he really encouraged me to get it as he said it’s probably one of the highest quality pinfires he had ever worked on. (And he has worked on hundreds and hundreds of various shotguns.)

Yes, and beside that mark is the bore designation, 34(encircled), with respect to the French pound, Livre. That too should bound the dates.

Cheers,
