I've taken LC Smith's apart on a regular basis and while not easy I can get it done now. Luckily there is good documentation available on the LC Smith's. Now I'd like to take apart an old Fox Sterlingworth but I can't find any written information on how to do this. This is not a pristine Fox. I got the stock off based on some earlier information I found on this site and that went fairly well.

What I would like is some basic directions or steps on how to strip it down further. In particular how do the hammers come out and then how is the best way to get them back in. Does it require a special tool?

Thanks for any help or information you can send my way.

The Fox is fairly easy. No complications as on a Smith, BUT
watch for the little spring under the large bottom plate screw
jumping out when the screw is removed.
.
It is the spring that pushes the pin up that keeps the lever open to the side

Most of the dissasembly is simple. a few notes:

The spring will not spring out, but it is easy to lose since you may turn the reciver over when taking it apart. Just get it out and store it as soon as the screw is out.

The sear return spring should be out and the hammers uncocked when removeing the sear axle. There is a set screw that holds the axle in place on all but the earliest guns.

To get the hammers out, remove tha axle (also a set screw) and pry the hammers up and roll them forward to remove them. To reinstall them, put a taper on a pin punch the size of the axle, (1/8"} and use it to assemble the hammers, Then use the axle to push the punch out.

I store all the parts in a clear fishing tackle tray with dividers.

Best, Dick

And keep in mind that above the spring is the "trip" or check for the rotary. Probably won't escape unless you punch it out but I've lost one from a 16 and it cost me 10$ and about 2 hrs. of work to modify one from a 12. And the safety pushrod in the cheek of the stock but you've probably seen that.

my spring was missing when I got the gun. I found another at an old timey local hardware store. I use a muffin tin or egg box to store take off parts.

The spring will not spring out but as he noted the spring and the detent will drop out when you turn it over and then all @#$% of the looking on your knees under the workbench will start.
