For years I have collected Remington 1889's. 3 weeks ago I finally bought the last one, a grade 5. I now have all 7 grades most in good or better condition, some in fine. Just had to let someone know besides me. It took a long time.

I knew the previous owner of that gun, Andy Anderson, he had one of the finest collections of Remington 1889's in the country. They were on display in the Remington Museum for a year. Andy belonged to the L.C. Smith Collectors Association and that is how I met him. He has since passed away and he left his guns to his godson who sold most through Julia's.
He also had a great collection of Browning sidelocks in both 12 and 20 gauge with all the different barrels offered. He had Browning make a stock that fit him and his godson. He collected Parkers as well.

Would really like to see pictures. Remingtons are not brand that I have seen many worth owning. They are always beat to pieces. I could learn something.

Congrats on your completion. At a long ago Vintage Cup at Sandanona I put Andy onto a Model 1889 No. 4, the last grade he need to fill his set. At one of the last Vintage Cups at Addieville I was there when he got a 16-gauge DE-Grade from Kirby Hoyt but I didn't see that gun appear in the auction.

Congratulations on your completion of your set. Not an easy task for certain. Better yet they will have years of safe harbor for the next generation to enjoy.

How can I tell what grade I have? Is it primarily based on the engraving? My 1889 has damascus barrels and semi fancy wood but no engraving so I assume a grade 3.

Buy the Semmer book on Remington doubles, a greatly underpriced book until they are all gone. I believe Double Gun Journal has them.

Sorry, but I shake too bad to take them. They would just be a blur.
