I followed an auction last Saturday in SE Pa on this long barreled A grade 20 bore Fox. It was in nice shape as far as I could tell from the limited pictures. It had a straight grip and deteriorated recoil pad. The LOP was OK. Extractor gun. The bidding reached $4300 on the internet before the auction started. This was lot # 232. In the blink of an eye it went to $7500 and when the smoke cleared, it hammered at an astonishing, to me, $14000 plus 18% buyers premium. Thats $16,520 plus shipping and insurance!! Clearly 2 fellows wanted this gun. Long barrel small bores make folks go a little crazy. Just an FYI guys!!

I saw a Fox like this at Chaddick's in the early 90s. He wanted a lot of money even then.

In a way I'm glad you didn't, Bobby. I'd have been sorely tempted to mortgage the "back forty" to buy it from you.

A 32" 20 Fox, even an A grade with extractors, has to be a very rare item. I sold a 30" well worn A grade 20 about 20 years ago. It was a mess, had been used hard and not taken care of for a long time. I regret the selling of it on one hand because I never found another better one I could afford, but I figured that with marginal barrels, a bad stock and heavy pitting on the bottom of the receiver I'd never get it fixed up. Sold it to a dealer who "reclaimed" it and declared it to be a high condition, factory original gun only two years later.

At least we know this one wont magically appear in a couple years as a high condition factory gun. That is the nice thing about the internet. Information once out there never goes away completely. Some photo of it will remain .

Any small bore doublegun with 32" barrels is rare. Even 30" small bores are not something you see everyday. Their usage is fairly limited in hunting. Doves is the first game bird that comes to mind where 30 and 32 inch barreled small bore guns would be useful, and desirable. Ducks is possibly another, like the "California duck club guns".

Smallbores in these configurations are very interesting to me. I have a 32" LC Smith, and a 30" AH Fox..........both in 16 gauge. Dove and crow guns for me................maybe a round of sporting clays occasionally. A 32" AH Fox 20 gauge is something to dream about............dreams about high flying, late season doves. Crisp, windy days that make them fly in ways that screw the gunner into the ground. Leads of 8-10 feet on a dove that is riding the 30 mph wind, in addition to it's 60 mph capability in a calm. Walking nearly 100 yards across a harvested peanut field to pick up a dove that you killed almost straight above you in that wind.

Mercy.

I had a close call with a 32 “ 20 ga. Philadelphia ejector Sterlingworh back in the 80’s. My old turkey-hunting mentor and I made a trip to the Birmingham Gun Show, found the gun laying on some obscure dealers table. I picked it up and inspected it. Other than honest wear, it was not a bad piece. I didn’t want it at the time but my friend did, wanted himself a “lightweight turkey gun”. Traded the dude a Savage 99 .243 and $400 for it. Later discovered it had almost no choke in either barrel and the ejectors were awfully weak. Never knew what happened to it, but dang sure wish I had bought it now. What a candidate for a serious upgrade.
