Dear all,
Eddy passed on Saturday at the age of 15.
Here is a picture of him on his last hunt on the ranch 2 years ago to the day.

It will take us time to adjust to the loss. He had many faults, but he had a great and gentle heart and was my constant partner. I already miss the silly stuff like him relentlessly trying to open the toilet lid to drink in it and having it bang on the way down, or his wet nose nudging my hand in the middle of the night. More than anything, I regret the missed opportunities, hunts, ATV rides, walks or other outings that did not happen...But I am oh so thankful for the time we did spend together.

His health had rapidly deteriorated in the last month. He was a bit better on Saturday being on the ranch, so that made it both harder and easier at the same time. Everything considered, it was the least bad available choice.

He still managed to pull a prank on me at the very end because I broke the house phone line while digging his grave. I both laughed and cried. Mostly cried.

Life goes on. I did send an email to his breeder to see what the options are for getting a close cousin. This will take time for sure. Maybe a female next time.

Best regards,
WC-

Sorry to hear the news WC. My condolences. My first setter was named Eddie/Ed so I like the name. Hope you find what you are looking for in your next one. Don't leave it too long. Even the ones not yet born need a good home.

My sympathy, WC. When you shared with us the incident about the phone line while you were digging a grave for your departed best friend- I recall, in I believe the first issue of Gun Dog, a piece by Ben Hur Lampman-an Oregon gentleman- entitled: "Where To Bury A Dog"-- and his tacit answer to the question his title posed was-- "In the heart of his Master"-- I hope you are able to find another hunting companion from the same bloodline-- and if that happens, the pain you feel now will be assuaged somehow over time.

Rudyard Kipling also treated this sad event in a shooting man's life in his poem: "The Power of The Dog"-- I have recalled it every time I had to bury my best 4-legged companion afield-all through the many years now behind me. RWTF

I have been where you are. I, and you, will be there again. I can no more live without a dog than I can live without air.

You have my deepest sympathy.

Best,
Ted

Here ya' go WC. Sorry for your loss. No greater loss, other than a two-legged loved one, than our dogs. Gil

Our dogs are family as close as children, maybe closer.

There is always a hole in our hearts when they leave us.
