Mr. Hallquist:

I too had similar thoughts on the #397 as an APUN but that faded upon further research. But some piece of the puzzle is still absent on the "R & S" stamp.

May be wrong here and I am in no way decrying the gun as it looks to be in an overall good state , but has it been re-colour hardened at some time ? My first impression would be yes .The action and plates look too good for the gaped screw heads .
Were the plugs in the stock original ? I have seen old guns with similar "repairs" that were done from new , both to replace knots and to fill shakes or voids in the wood that did not show up till the stock was being turned out . The fact that the colour match is so good would in my mind say it was from new as to get that match years later is very difficult . Though I do suspect that the small plugs were later to keep the originals in lace .
One thing that is obvious from the photos is that the barrel flats appear to be are hard down on the action on one side and that the extractor stop pin is hitting the action bridge . This needs to be eased off as it will have an effect on the locking bolt and can lead to the gun eventually blowing of face .

The R & S may be Rogers & Son, patent holders of #397. The respective names being John Thomas Rogers & John Rogers who I assume were father and son. Given that Patent # 397 became the standard British trade sidelock action (according to Crudgington & Baker) then #81 would be the Patent Use Number.
Crudgington & Baker also provide an illustration from Clabrough's San Francisco catalogue of 1881 showing a gun built on this patent, the lock plate shape being the same as that on the original poster's gun.

I have a C.G. Bonehill 10 ga. It belonged to my Great greatgrandfather. It came with him from NC to the opening of the Oklahoma Territory and then to South Texas. I will try to post pictures in a new thread with some more background. I hope you fine folks will be able to provide me with some more info on it.

This is the first mention I have seen of it ever, but, I don't get out much.

Thanks.

Interesting thought. Are there any other patents issued to a firm that has "Son" in the name? Or any APUNs that have "Son" abbreviated by the letter S?

I seem to recall a Purdey (Patent) hammer gun marked as "JP&S Patent"along with patent & use numbers ?. Its a long time since I had the gun so maybe my memory has it wrong smile

A bit more digging confirms the Rogers as father and son, thus the R & S. Just by chance came across J D & S marking for John Dickson & Son so there are a few out there

Thanks for the replys everyone, will have another look over it when it comes back with a new recoil pad fitted. Trying to source some 10 gauge hulls for reloading at the moment. Hopefully will put a few BP shells through on the weekend and see how it goes!

Cheers
Rhys
