I've been contaminated by you guys and the older American guns. The NIDs aren't as pricey as some of the others so I looked (long and hard) for an unmonkeyed one with my dimensions...Thanks guys!

The 30" barrels are very clean and choked Mod and Full with 2 beads. The CCH is better than most of the pics show - the top view is fairly accurate. According to the SN chart this is a 1939 NID. The shoulder strap on the LoM case has a neatly jackknifed inscription: Bert Engstrom, McHenry, Ill 1946. Whatever the date, I think ol' Bert took really good care of his gun.

Nice looking gun....The inscription makes ya wonder if it wasnt a guy returning from ww2 and deciding to pick up a nice double with some of that discharge back pay...

Thanks for the good words guys, I thought you'd like it. Butt ugly is in the eye of the beholder, non?

Walt,
It's s/n 4657XX and I decided to send my check to the man about a month ago...it takes a quite a while to clear the Bloombergian Customs Agents in NYC. Now I need to send you a check, get your book and start on that slippery slope; knowledge - desire - acquistion, repeat as needed.

Yeti, Be very sure you want to go on that slope. I got on it 20 years ago and can't seem to get off it. A very nice gun-congratulations.
There a only a few guys here that are stuck on this BU bit. I guess they consider themselves the shotgun police and as such feel it their duty to tell us what is good and what is not good. I have laid Ithacas, Smiths Parkers etc. side by side and, while there are differences, I can not see what this BU fuss is all about. If I can't see ugly, it doesn't exist for me. I guess beauty is in the eye of the butt holder. You pays the money and yous make the descision. In the unlikely event you deem it BU, please notify me at once and I will rush to remove it from your view. In the mean time, enjoy that piece of iron made up there on GunShop Hill.

Look at it this way. You could have spent a thousand dollars more and might have been able to find a nice shape British boxlock gun that would require CIP shells. You could have spent $500.00 more and bought a L.C. Smith and waited for the cracks to start and then find out how much fun they are to restock. You could have spent three times the money and found a Parker and joined that group and worried about originality in all things Parker. Might have found a Fox for more money, but if a late model it would not have the fit and finish of what you have. In short you have bought the last solid shooter that was made in America as a major makers main gun.

I don't take the Butt Ugly comments seriously, it's just a running joke that I don't agree with (otherwise I wouldn't have bought this gun. No bargain- internet gundealer retail but I'm still tickled. Mr KYJon who does seem to find those good pawnshop bargains commented to me in regards to this purchase "IF you like the gun you never overpay. Money comes and goes but gun memories are forever..... Point is if the gun suits you buy it and enjoy." - Thanks, Jon). The BU'ers were also throwing the M21 into the same boat and I like that gun too.

The BU thing is Ball Busting, which is an olympic sport here in NY. My 4 year old son announced at the dinner table tonight in that high pitched little boy's voice
"Did you know...that 'yeah, right' means no? It does."
