As with all EXTRACTOR double purchases, when your about to lay your money down, even on a Smith...after removing the barrels, using your thumb, press a penny against the standing breech, over the firing pin hole and let 'er rip....try to press Lincoln's face right over firing pin hole so that you can read the dent afterwards...hammer or hammerless, this system works well...do not use this system on ejector guns, and do not do this until your just about to lay down your money

If you begin this test with the safety on, you can test the safety, the strength of the mainspring, and the firing pin all at the same time.

Since I haven't posted this for many years...
I cut the plastic off of an old shotshell and punch out the primer. Fired .22 brass slides easily into a shotshell primer hole. You can check the dent on the .22 brass to see how the firing pin is doing. This should be fine for checking a hardware store gun. It's easy to carry and easy to check to see that the brass is inert.

It is not as popular as it once was but for a number of years many varmit shooters swaged their .22 cal bullets using fired .22 rimfire cases as the jackets. Matter of fact if I am not mistaken I think dies for this was RCBS (Rock Chuck Bullet Swage)'s bread & butter in their formative years.
