Baby wipes are indeed, great inventions. They are slick for cleaning a shotgun that's been fouled with blackpowder among many other things.

We teach all of our dogs to drink water from a bottle - one of those with the push-pull tops that seals really well and is easy to squirt water directly into their mouths. Saves on the amount of water I need to haul when chasing birds.

Sunglasses. Even on cloudy days - keeps the cattails and tall grass out of one's eyes when bird hunting.

And a piece of close-cell foam to sit on when it is wet and/or frozen out.

Have a time sliding on or taking off rubber or leather boots because of roughness of wool socks or high instep? Get a bag of nylon anklet socks and slide over socks. They stretch significantly. Okay, they're made for women but work fine for the above purpose. Gil

Sorry Stan, wet wipes were already taken. Also in my kit is a baggy with clean paper towel (many uses including toilet functions) and another baggy with a clean oily rag and thirdly a pair or two of disposable vinyl gloves.

daughter in law, a vet, advises not to pull quills in field; but to immediately bring dog to vets office...where sedative, pain killer and muscle relaxer can be administered, (to the dog, that is)...in severe cases, doggie can be anesthetised, and quills fully removed...as i understand it, when doggie is stressed and tense, tips of quills will some time break off in wound and cause troubles later on....

Perhaps most of you already know of GPS software for your cell phone, but if you don't, it is one slick trick. You can find out instantly, whose ground you are standing on, where the boundaries are, and all on a system that totally overwhelms the functionality of a dedicated GPS. I am using OnX maps, and they are amazing, including aerial photos that show holes in the cattails, channels to get to them, and a sorts of things you may not have considered even needing before.

The big game folks out west are all over this, but it works just dandy for bird hunting anywhere.

And, no, you do NOT need cell tower coverage to use in the field. In fact, you probably don't even want to use cell coverage.

I've given Gatorade to old dogs when hunting them. Reduced 50:50 with water. It is high in sugar and sodium and old dogs may have a little kidney problem it they drink too much Gatorade. Had one old pointer who hated orange flavor but would lap up any other flavor. Maybe his mother made him drink orange juice as a puppy.

Not a tip as much as an observation from hunting a lot off the Chesapeake Bay as a boy. No matter which direction the wind is blowing as you are setting up in the dark it will shift almost always by up to 90 degrees after sunup. Best thing to do is quickly adjust your spread because ducks just hate flying over decoys to get into you landing spot. Geese even more. So I always set up one leg of the spread which could be picked up and reset in just a couple minutes.

I kept a log about every day spent hunting ducks for 20 plus years, Wind, temperature, wind changes, birds seen, which direction they came from. Where I was and who I was with. Total bag taken, types of birds, number of decoys used and even what type of decoy spread I used. Even noted the number of time I was checked by the rabbit cops. Log books do help you figure out what works or in some cases shows you that what use to be a great spot has ceased to be much of a spot at all. I've got several of those type spots. The number of ducks our marsh holds is down 2/3 from what it held just 20 years ago. Nothing a bit of early cold weather and 25 bushels of Pioneer could not fix.

Old motorcycle inner tubes make good dog boots for sand bur country. Leave toes open so sand can get out & not chafe pads.

I wrap duct tape around my water bottle so there is always some handy.
