OK, I do not have the proof mark answer.
Here is what I would try. Will the bolt
close on a 30-06 round?
If No, will the bolt close on an 8mm mauser round?
If Yes, is the bolt face opened up to a Brenneke diameter?

The cartridge is 9x57 as halger stated. The 108.49 is , indeed, one of the marks often found on pre 1911 sporting 9.3 mm rifles( mostly rimmed). Mauser stamped the barrel with other markings which show specifics of the barrel's dimensions. The 8,85( they used a, instead of a .)is the bore(not groove or bullet) diameter. The 9,1 is the groove diameter. The 850 is the length of twist. These dimensions fit the 9x57. Also, the barrel is marked 9,0H. We call the cartridge 9x57 Mauser, but some think it was actually a Haenel cartridge, which could fit the "H".

Mike Mike, For clarity. You are saying this is the 9x57 Mauser(Haenel) using .356" bullets. NOT The 9.3x57 Mauser/Mannlicher using .366" bullets. I leave tomorrow, but may try to slug the bore to get a bore measurement. EDIT: At one time I had boxes of ammo for both of these calibers..... Sold them to a local guy a year or two ago.

That Is what I believe. My 9x57 and the others I slugged all had .358" barrels, but I'm satisfied some are .356"( I know of a couple reported to be .352"). I use .358 bullets in mine and the others may also accept .358 bullets. If a .358 bullet will fit into the neck of a fired but unsized case, it can be used in that rifle. The lesson here is, if you have hard to find ammo, keep it; you never know when you will need it.

No worries.
Local guy I see at many of the auctions who buys and sells rare ammo already has an email in his inbox.
If I shoot it at all, it will be only to check a fired case. After(!) I do a chamber cast.

The 9x57 was and is a good workman like caliber, used all over the world, there is no reason not to use and enjoy it. A German friend of mine loaded for his using Norma 358 Winchester data, powder and bullets with complete satisfaction.
