I know I read about this many years ago. It was a woman hunting with a Savage M1899. She was using a tang sight and either shooting uphill or downhill. Might have been a .22HP or a .250. Anyway, the tang sight reportedly hit her eye. I don't recall if she lost the eye. A fellow collector vaguely recalls the story. He thought perhaps the shooter was Mrs. Crossman. Anyone recall the details and know where the story was told?

yes, I've heard that story too, here is one web site that says it happened to the wife of Paul Curtis.

Very cool. Thank you. Nice to know I remembered something that actually happened. I wonder where Elmer Keith wrote up his several accounts of the event?

I wonder what tang sight was mounted on Mrs. Curtis's rifle? The Savage tang sight does extend a fair way back. The Marbles Special Base sight was available for the M1899. It wasn't a popular sight and I don't know that I've seen one on a Savage. Here's one I have on a Marlin M1893 carbine. As you can see, it sits way back:

I don't think that sight would be mounted on my favorite shooter.

I have one of the Flexible Base Marbles sights on my Husqvarna Type 33A and also on several Marlin rifles. I love them for a couple reasons. First they don't hit the comb when folded down. And second they give me a good sight picture at this location. Never came close to hitting my eye or my shooting glasses.

Val - here is a pair of .30-30 half magazine carbines - one Marlin 1893 and one Winchester 1894 with the special base sight. Another advantage of this sight is the grip area is completely clean and the hand can fully wrap around it. This is an improvement over the typical tang sight where it is in the way. The sight looks nice on your Husqvarna.

The Husqvarna Type 33's have a rudimentary two leaffun to shoot. express sight, and an even worse front blade. Not conducive to very accurate shooting, and I was having trouble working up good loads with those sights.
I finally gave in and D&T the tang for this sight, and installed it. I think it is either 1.125" Marlin, or 1.5" Stevens? It made a huge difference in making the Husky fun to shoot.

Vall - I couldn't make it out in the photo but do you have a larger aperture installed? I need something larger as the small one that comes with the sight is nearly invisible to my eyes.
