A friend recently showed me a gun by John Powell in London. He said they were actually spanish guns and finished in London but didn't know much else. Does anyone know when these guns were made and how the quality is? It looked like a very well made gun to my brief inspection.

The actions always have the look of Union Armera of the time.

Iirc, John Allen of the former Gamefair in Nashville, was working at Paul Jaeger Inc. which was housed in Dunn's Sporting in Grand Junction, TN in the 80's, did a run of some of these guns during that period. I do think John Boyd is correct about the barreled actions being sourced from Arrieta, but I want to say I have a vague remembrance of Arrizablaga doing them.

Occasionally a John Powell engraved scalloped action over and under 12 bore is offered for sale in UK
Edit to add
One can be found in March 2017 Holts sealed bid auction.
There was also a John Powell sidelock over and under ,made by Abbiatico and Salvinelli ,that was sold through Holts too.

Interesting as I've looked around I've found several like it that claim or are marked to be made by Grulla rather than Arrieta. Either way has anyone had one? Do they hold up or are they junk?

All the s/s ones I`ve seen were certainly the old Union Armera/Grulla action shape. They used to go for big ££ years ago but people were`n`t as aware of their source back then! Often short barrelled too as was the fashion when they were made.
