Seems likely it was rechambered or misdescribed .22 hornet.

Why do you say that? The description could hardly be shorter but none of it indicated it was a .22H that I could see.

Bernard H. (Barney) Worthen:
I wrote about Barney Worthen in the August, 2000 PS and since that time I have received information on many of his rifles and have examined first-hand a few as well. I’m impressed with his work. The more I see the more I like what he did with both the metal and wood. Barney Worthen was born in Illinois on April 12th, 1867 and died in San Francisco January 27th, 1940.



Mike walker designed the .222 Remington and it was released to the commercial market in 1950.

A Griffin & Howe .22 hornet converted to 222 rem mag sold a few months ago on gunbroker so it's not an unheard-of conversion.

Just my guess based on the sparse pictures and description.

375, When your talking about Worthen metalwork, for me I like his bolt lock. I was lucky to find a 1903 barreled action he did. It was in a junker stock, but I bought it cheap and the metal in great shape. I restocked it and have hunted 2years with it.
I am left handed so on other 03s I’ve hunted with the bolt handle contacts my hip/side and lifts. Worthens bolt lock works well, I would say the bolt says putt about 80% better. BTW it not really a “lock” but a simple friction. Dan

I attended the auction in person. I know the owner who consigned those custom guns and he could politely be described as “questionable “. The Worthen was originally a .30-06 but is now a .222. Most of the other guns have at one time or another been through the workshop of a well-known custom gunmaker that he’s been good friends with for many years. I was pretty surprised at the high prices and I came home empty handed. Many guns there brought two or three times what I felt they were worth.

Shane,

Did you get to look at the guns before they sold? The Worthen sure looks like it is a 22 Springfield action (no gas escape hole) but the bolt isn't a 22 bolt. I wonder what the bolt looks like when open or out of the gun. I think it may have been a 22 RF before someone worked it over into a 222.

Do we know who bought this rifle?
If the purchaser of this rifle is on the forum, I would really enjoy seeing pictures of the details of the takedown features, when they receive their rifle. In both assembled and disassembled conditions
