A very old hunter, friend of a friend, is circulating a list of shotguns that he wants to sell. One of them is listed as:

Quote:
Daray S/S Spanish Sidelock 20 GA 28" M/F

Anyone recognize Daray? No hits on Google yet. No pics of the gun, just got the list. Any ideas? Thanks.

I thought it might be a Darby or Derby. Darby is English and Derby is Spanish, but I guess I'll need to see the gun to be sure. Asking for pics of rib markings or proof marks is probably futile at this stage. List is hand written, but the old guy has great printing and the rest of the list is very precisely written. Lots of interesting guns, so we are trying to not overwhelm him with questions.

Derby was an O/U model of Laurona.

Thanks. I think the Spanish Derby SxS was produced by Armas Erbi and F. Sarriugarte, as well as under the DIARM conglomerate. Some old threads say that the Derby was imported by American Arms and Tristar. I need to get my eyes on the actual gun, but I don't want to be a pest. This guy has a load of Superposeds, Model 12s and 42s, Win 101s, Rem 32s, and other stuff that I don't want to be tempted by. The one I might really tempted by is a Parker SBT C-Grade.

I don't know if Erbi and Sarriugarte made a SxS with the name of "Derby". Hope you can see the gun we're talking about and tell us how is it.

Regards!

DIARM did make a SxS side lock with the model designation Derby. This is from a DIARM catalog from 1986:

The DIARM Derby was usually marked as if it had been made by Sarriugarte.

That said when it comes to Spanish artisanal shotguns the markings on the top of the barrels is advertising. Manufacturing data is found on the barrel flats and water table. "Daray" may be a meaningless model name chosen by the gun's retailer.

After DIARM closed and was no longer available to make the Derby, American Arms contracted with Zabala Hermanos to make model Derby side lock shotguns.

When it comes to Spanish shotguns, model names have limited utility.

Over on Shotgun World there is a thread that concerns what appears to be an AyA model 53. The Aya model 53 is typically built as a medium game gun, but this one looks to have been made as a light game gun. Go Figure.
