Not at all practical in that ten dimes make a dollar and in the 1880s that was a day's pay. Talk about the price of Bismuth!

History Channel did a special on Billy the Kid. They fired a buckshot load at a hanging pig carcass. Then a load of dimes. The buckshot tore it up the dimes mostly bounced off. Maybe the original less lethal round?

The ballistic coefficient of flat coins are, well, not great. Not to mention the sectional density!

I also wonder what the heck coins he used in what gauge barrel. Today's Roosevelt dime won't fit past a full choke 12-bore. I'd say he ended up with a choke bulge if nothing worse!

those would be civil war era dimes...

most likely gun that early, is not choked...

an thinkin, perhaps the dimes all stayed together at close range. sorta like ah silver slug...

some testin is in order, but pre 1870 vintage cartridge guns in shooting condish are scearce...
