I saw one with a serial # on the trigger guard of the
english stock of 'a3911'. Curious when it was born.

It also has both a slots on the barrel breech tops and firing pins. This seemed strange, could it fire either cartridge?

the Westley Richards website puts Ser. No. a3911 as being built between 2016 and 2026. So I took the "a" off and it shows Ser. No. 3911 as being built between 1825 and 1835. I've seen WR "crab knuckle" hammer guns that were supposed to fire either pinafore or centerfire cartridges, but I don't know the truth of that.

I Will try to crank up a picture soon. Seems early for a pinfire, but it sure isn't from 2016 and 2026 as I saw it before in the mid 1950's!

Thanks for the input.

Welder,
I own WR 12-b pinfire No.a3440. Proofmarks and the patent use number on
the standing breech will assist in dating. My gun is patent use number 74.

Westley Richards repeated serial numbers. They also made guns that could
use pinfire or centerfire cartridges.

It appears the “a” prefix doesn’t appear in the WR recap of serial numbers, but aligns with the dates listed under Best Doubleguns and Rifles. This is a great reference for Westley Richards guns:
