I'm restoring a nice vintage Syracuse shotgun and my smith said that after case coloring it, some of the engraving is kind of lost under the coloring. Is there a way to tone down the coloring so that the nicely done engraving will show up better.

I like to use rotten stone on a soft cotton rag lubricated with raw linseed oil.

Thank you sir, that is what I will do. I also have a high grade AYA side lock with a garish nickel finish on it, will the same method, tone down the brightness to that finish so it looks more like a coin finish?
