London gunmaker who worked for Forsyth, what else can you tell me about him? A good friend just picked up a 28 bore pinfire double rifle by him.

Here is what the IGC says about him:

Trade: Gunmaker

Dates: 1838-1875

Notes:

In the late 1860s Bernard Denyer changed his name from Barnard Denyer. He was born in 1801 in Farlington, Hampshire, the son of William Denyer, a brick and lime burner.

He was employed by Forsyth before establishing his own business in 1838 at 21 Percy Street, Tottenham Court Road. He moved in 1840 to 11 Seymour Place, Camden Town.

On 24 July 1825 he married Sarah (nee French b.1811 in Middlesex). They were recorded in the 1841 census living in Seymour Place, St Pancras with their children Jane (b.1827), William (b.1828), Ann (b.1833), Emily (b.1835) and George (b.1840). Barnard described himself as a 40 year old gun maker.

In 1847 he moved to 336 Oxford Street and in 1850 he moved to 131 Holborn Hill. He was recorded in the 1851 census as a 50 year old gun maker but by this time Sarah had died and on 11 November 1849 he had married 26 year old Emma (nee Chapman b.1825 in Colchester, Essex). Of Sarah's children only George was living at home at 131 Holborn on the night of the census.

The 1861 census records Barnard, Emma and William (a 32 year old gun maker) and two children by Emma, Emma J (b.1852 and Charles B (b.1854).

The 1871 census records Bernard as a 70 year old gun maker still living at 131 Holborn with Emma, Emma J and Charles B.

Bernard appears to have died in about 1874. The business was last recorded in 1875.

We made up cartridges the night before last and took it to the range yesterday. We only had 4 cartridges and one failed to fire, the other 3 grouped into just over an inch at 25 yards. More to be done but my friend is on the right track with his first pin fire rifle.
