30 days until Grousemas! As an aside, the Woodcock season opens on the same day instead of a week later here in Michigan.

Opening the seasons together makes a certain amount of sense. But as it is here in Wisconsin, with woodcock season opening later than grouse season, it's not unusual to still have woodcock around--even in the northern part of the state--when the season closes.

Larry,
It's just frustrating to start the Grouse opener, to wind up flushing Woodcock for most of the preceding week of the seasons startup. I'm really looking forward to this years season!

If only Missouri had enough grouse for an open season.

Lloyd,
For most of my life, woodcock season opened on September 1st, with grouse season opening on the weekend closer to September 17th.
Truthfully, in the years of my first Setter’s life, the woodcock flights were staggering, this is 1987-2002. Hunting them before the leaves have actually turned, or before the mosquitoes had seen a frost or two, just wasn’t much fun in my book.
Shortening the season up by moving the opener three weeks later, is likely a very good thing for the birds, as the numbers are a shadow of what I used to experience.
If LOW county doesn’t get some rain, I would not be at all surprised to see the season closed there. Explosively dry.

Best,
Ted

Ted: Yes...hearing things are bad dry there. My brother heard yesterday that he's not likely going to be able to get his boat out of the bay if he goes up early this year because the water is so low. Having a hard time visualizing that (it's always been too darn rainy up there, never too dry). I have seen more woodcock in the last few years then I have for a long while, so perhaps things are improving slightly?

When it's excessively rainy in one part of our country it's dryer than normal in another. For example, we're having a cooler than normal, and very wet, summer here, while the Pacific Northwest, which is normally very wet all summer, is experiencing the hottest and driest summer in recent history.

If you don't like the weather just be patient, it will change.

May God bless America and those who defend her.
