Sleeved and nicely restocked (or one heck of a refinish on the wood?), not too badly priced:

After closer inspection of photos I think it's original wood.

Nice fowler. Since it is sleeved and tubed by Briley, it should be fine with steel shot. Or even tungsten, for the long second shot.

I would not assume that.

Not being a real Lefever enthusiast, I had not noticed that Daryl. It looks different for sure, but really nice.

Yeah, a Lefever in that era would have a flat patterned rib, not a concave unpatterned rib. Of course, it could be a Damascus concave rib blued over.

Isn't it entirely possible that the original owner ordered the rib on his gun to be concave and un-matted? We all know Lefever would have done so when a gun was special ordered.

I suppose anything is possible within reason. But this theory is highly unlikely for a number of reasons. First, this gun has been sleeved, and the new tubes including their screw-in chokes are a non-standard 30 1/4" long. Also, the barrels were sleeved for a reason, which could include being pitted, ruptured, cut, or other damage that rendered the original ribs unusable. Another factor is that Dan Lefever was quite proud of his rib matting machine... enough so that he utilized the same ribs on the guns built by the three successor companies he started after being forced out of Lefever Arms. Co. by the Durstons. Of course, he may have already been gone by the time this E grade was built.

If we had seen other Lefever guns in this range with this style rib, it might be plausible. But we don't. One possible way to know would be to check if Briley's has any record of the work.

This is a tough one.

As Tom said, Lefever would certainly have accomodated someone wanting a non-standard rib. I must say, I have never seen an E grade with the rib engraved. Given the style of it though, Im inclined to think that feature is original. So that part doesnt give me pause.

More importanly...I think this gun has been superbly restored.

The colors are nicely muted, and would otherwise be believable as original, if the wood appeared untouched. But it doesn't. The key is the underside, where the stock meets the frame...always a tough spot. You wouldn't simultaneously have that wear, while also having perfect checkering.

IMO, this gun was very, very experly redone. Best guess is Brad Bachelder, mainly because of the colors.

The seller's price reflects an older restoration. If this was original...to me at least...it's a $4000-5000 gun.

Would make a lovely club shooter and conversation piece as it is.
