I am converting a German Shrank into a guncase with two vertical (left and right) gunspace areas and a central area of shelves. Horizontal storage is not an option and my personal preference is to store guns butt up/barrel down so that oil does not run into the wood. However, I was wondering what people do and if there were any nice templates for receiving barrels and holding stocks that people might share?

This subject has been talked and written about to the point of "Ad Nauseam" so best make up your own mind.

I store my guns butt up for that very reason. However, over time all oil and grease also wicks upward just as though there were no such thing as gravity. So, whatever excess lubricant is in the action will end up wicking into wood. It requires an amazingly small amount of oil/grease to fully coat the working pieces. Don’t worry about getting it into every nook and cranny—the wicking will assure it gets there.

Related question (to the post title at least) do folks store their guns in cases? or always in a safe or cabinet? I'm curious about this because I have always been under the impression that storing a gun inside a case was asking for problems with rust and such.

(I understand that the post was actually asking about a gun cabinet, though I had never heard of a shrank)

Schrank or shrank, a tall wardrobe-like German chest with double doors. Often used as hope chests, these were constructed so as to partially dismantle for transport to the matrimonial home.

Still looking for any double gun templates. I will post what I come up with.

Woodreaux I feel that you would have more folks to add their experiences to your posting "cabinets or cases£ if you posted it on the general interest section.
