Drewbie- your detailed post gives testimony to the mystique of both "The Duke" and Hollywood trickery- Wonder what make and model of shotguns were used by: (1)Val Kilmer in "Tombstone" and Clint Eastwood in "Unforgiven. Both were hammerguns, either 10 or 12 bore- that's where my info stops. Care to "take a shot" at further details? In the gunfight scene at the OK corral, Kilmer's character "Doc" Holliday- fires 3-- count 'em- 3 shots from that scattergun without breaking it to reload--amazing.. RWTF

If we're going to pick the movie apart, slow it down and look at around 1:48:21, the third or fourth guy from the left in the back row has a very modern looking wristwatch with a black band, gold bezel and white face. Very unlikely such a sleek watch existed, let alone owned by a cowpoke in the west.

I don't remember the time period, but I do remember The Duke opening his gun after shooting a pheasant and ejecting the shells. Obviously, he wasn't shooting the Crescent in that scene. I would assume the pheasant was actually shot, maybe by The Duke, but with a more reliable modern ejector gun. Can anyone link that scene for us?

Murph,
Just go back to the post with the video in it and run your cursor along the timeline bar until you get to 1:16:40 or slightly earlier, click, then hit the play button, or hit the play button and then do the timeline bar.

FWIW, I see a brass plate in the butt. I would guess a studio gun wouldn't have a brass plate in the butt. So, I'd venture a guess that the gun was JW's and likely a favorite of his for hunting. The brass plate might be an indication it was a gift, or he was one of those that had to put his name on everything. But in the scene where he shoots the rooster, you can clearly see the brass plate before he mounts the gun at 1:16:39 and when he breaks the gun in the following scene. At just after 1:18:06, where he breaks the gun and reloads, you can clearly see the plastic shell. It looks ribbed to me.

The saddle the girl is riding is likely a 1930s or later design. It has a Meana "Cheyenne roll", padded seat, jockeys, and the seat is fully covered and is angle up forward to the fork but is still double ring rigged to the tree rigging. Fairly modern stuff.

Where guns are concerned, you're perhaps most likely to find something close to reality in movies directed by John Milius.

"Unforgiven" is a great movie, but English Bob shooting pheasants off the train doesn't work. Prairie chickens or sharpies . . . maybe.

I think I was mistaken. The "auto ejectors" are just shells falling out of the gun after firing. In addition, the nameplate on the gun is on a hammer gun, maybe the studio gun after all.

Appaloosa was an underrated western movie, IMO. Everett Hitch, portrayed by Viggo Mortensen, was a good character play. I liked his choice of enforcement weaponry. It was supposed to be an 8 gauge, but was in reality a Colt 1878, 12 ga., that had been "sleeved" in a manner to make the bores look much larger. The job was well done, too. Hitch carried brass 8s on his shell belt, but the gun really fired 12 ga. blanks.
