OP muchatrucha Sidelock Joined: May 2005 Posts: 190 Likes: 11 Santa Fe, NM	I am considering the purchase of a SXS gun that has a professionally installed floating ventilated top rib silver soldered on. It is not a Simmons rib. Does anyone know of a good gunsmith who can properly do the job. The only constant in life is change.

Silver solder will usually only be found in the breech end of barrels in locking lugs and such. Other parts like forend lugs and ribs are fused with a lower temp solder as to not compromise the earlier Silver soldered joints. B.Dudley

bill schodlatz Sidelock Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 2,961 Likes: 9 Ruston,LA	Modern AL ribs are put on with two sided tape and can be removed by using a very thin wire drawn through the joint. Simmons ribs were soft soldered. If it takes heat to do the job it could be a major chore. bill

If you remove the rib will you reblue the barrels? Go the site for Art's Gun Shop and you will see a video on re soldering barrels and ribs on a Perazzi. The initial portion of the video will show removal of a soft (not silver) soldered rib.

Floating ribs are usually slid in place over dovetailed posts, so barrels can expand without stressing the rib attachments. I think the bead front sight is threaded thru the rib, and anchors the end of a floating rib. Don't know how the posts are atteched--you need to examine closely--they might be soft soldered or threaded into the lower top rib.
