Fellows, I just acquired a NRA Springfield Sporter with 10-30 barrel date, star guage barrel with perfect bore( unusual), S/N 1,366,688. It has the SN electropenciled on the bolt underneath the extractor, and someone, I think Stoeger in NY, has done some customizing on it. I say that because it has an engraved steel buttplate with trap and three holes for cartridges, plus an engraved steel grip cap that match exactly the ones in the 1932 Stoeger catalog in their remodeling section with the Townsend Whelen recommended accessories for the 1903 Springfield.I believe Stoeger also checkered and refinished the stock at the same time. Does anyone know how I might go about checking this SN to see when and who it kight have been shipped to? Thanks, Sandlapper

Your serial number is listed as a Sporter in Frank Mallory's DCM Rifle Sales 1922-1942. You can join Springfield Research Service and request the information they have on that serial number. There is a fee.

After looking up the Springfield Research Service on the internet, I'm a little confused as to how to request a research letter. I can't find any recent info on whether they are still operating or not. Can anyone steer me to the correct place, please? Thanks, Sandlapper

Sounds suspiciously like it could be a G&H-modified NRA Sporter, per the overview in Michael's book?

A couple good photos and someone on here might be able to help you out identifying if Stoeger or maybe someone else restyled the rifle. Not just that, but we just like pictures.  John

I'll be glad to post some pictures if someone can dumb the process down or I can send them to someone who can post them. I took the rifle down today and found the nos. on the bottom of the barrel; 1 over 1088. The reason I surmise that Stoeger may have done the work is that the engraving on the grip cap and trap buttplate are Exactly like the ones pictured in the 1932 catalog , plus they offered a complete remodeling service, also. I have seen Vol. 2 of Mr. Petrov's Custom Gunmakers, but have not seen Vol. 1, which I assume is the one you are referring to.Maybe if Zi can get some pictures up, some of you subject matter experts can tell me what I've got and who might have customized it. Thanks, Sandlapper

Volume 2 has a chapter called "Depression Era Sporters". In this chapter ther are G&H re-styled NRA sporters, as well as a Neidner/Shelhamer rifle.

I had it apart the other day and could not see any names or really anything stamped in the wood or metal that would identify the gunsmith, other than the star gauge nos. stamped on the bottom of barrel. Thanks, Sandlapper
