I forgot about the "Gooey Pad" a hot seller in the 90's but got everything stuck to them like fly paper!

Physics tells you recoil is the same with a pad and without but felt recoil is less with a pad. I never liked the super soft Gooey pads but do like the Kick-Ezz pads. They even look nicer that any white line pads. I learned that soft pads grind better when cold. So I put them in the freezer to stiffen them up before grinding. First I do a gross grind to get them down to within 1/16-1/8”. Drop them into the freezer and come back to do a fine grind down to proper size. Sometimes they expand 1/32” afterwards but nothing greater. I just smooth them off as needed. Funny thing is I rarely add a pad to any gun that does not already have one these days. I use a slip on pad and leave the gun as is.

I thought, since Mike mention my name, that I would add my two cents to the conversation.

I use Cervellati recoil pads for all of my pads now. They are very soft but grind easy and are a perfect base for leather covered pads. These pads are also very light, as I remember they are half the weight of pads of a similar size and don't in my opinion require wood removal to balance a gun. I just love them. I get these pads from Hastings Distribution, they are also inexpensive FWIW.

Thank you all for the feedback. I have used KICK EEZ and many of the better brands mentioned. Mostly I’ve used them as a base for leather covering or to lengthen the stock. I still can’t say whether they reduce felt recoil.
Probably would need to fire each gun with and without the pad to determine whether they actually reduce perceived recoil.
Something for another day…

Oh crap... there is no better way to throw cold water on a Thread than to bluntly state the obvious as Geo has done here!

If this sentiment continues, we might not see this discussion go on for 20 or more pages. And we might not see the Preacher post his vast collection of vintage recoil pad advertisements, or links to studies about his recoil induced flinch and computer mouse flinching disorder.

Everyone is different and can take different amounts of recoil. I think that is what Geo. is trying to say.

I put a Remington Super Cell on a 3.5" Turkey pump gun that had no pad at the time. It truly was like night and day. Answer absolutely. Now, I hate putting a pad on bird gun, but a gun that is used for Clays and shot a lot is a resounding yes. Why beat yourself up.

The reason recoil applied to the shooter decreases is that the amount of energy absorbed by the pad is turned into the heat of compression, and is not conveyed to the shooter.
Also, lengthening the time of collision spreads the same energy pulse over a longer time.
So the peak is lower for the same energy input.

A somewhat fascinating comparison is the difference of a very light weight person, and a very solidly built person shooting the same load, it is easier for the gun to accelerate the lithsome person in reverse, further decreasing the felt recoil because of the length of time involved.

All quite academic, because all we really need to know is, yes they work, and do you like how they look?
