My memory is foggy but I believe I have read that a heavy gun, say a double rifle, would be stocked just slightly shorter than a sxs shotgun. So if my normal lop is 15" with a 6 1/2 lb game gun, a double rifle or an 8 lb sxs might be 1/4 or 3/8" shorter. I think the idea is to bring that heavier weight back closer to your body to ease in mounting. Does this make sense.

Or with more weight, you would have more leverage, making it easier to hold - more steadily. Just a wild guess on my part...............

I’m sure you could come up with some logic for the LOPs being different, but my .470 and my custom-fitted 20 gauge both have LOPs of 14 3/4”. Both have double triggers and shoot well. Neither gun is likely to get used in circumstances where I’d wear a heavy coat, so that is possibly a consideration.

The key to your question is that " you read somewhere " .Unfortunately what is written and what is fact , what is reality , practicality and personal choice , can be very different things .A preferred stock length can depend on the kind of shooting ,your shooting style , the location , season and or preferred clothing for the that .You can also add the stock shape SHS /FPH SPH /POW. Double or single trigger and calibre to the mix. These can and do make a difference to some . . Weight needs to be comfortable between the hands and may be different to the perceived " balance point" which in itself is tenuous . In other words its down to the man behind the gun and thats all .

Not a double rifle, but I had Reto Beuhler do a fitting befor he built my 404 Jeffery. I like my shotguns at 14-7/8" LOP and the Jeffery came in very close to that measurement. Shoots like a dream and I killed two bull Buffalo with it in Tanzania last year. Longer stock keeps your thumb a bit further from your nose, which useful when firing a heavy rifle.
