I ran into a SKB O/U 12ga sidelock I think mod 51. It seemed like a very well made gun but I can't find any info on it. Can anyone tell me anything about it?

Pay particular attention to head of the stock around lock plates, back of the top strap and the corresponding area at the bottom, behind the trigger guard. Microscopic surface crack may point to stock completely wrecked behind the plate. On the fore end check area around the latch, and where the wood meets the metal of the fore end iron at the back.

I have been doing this for 35 years and have never seen or hear of a SKB sidelock. I even have the Original SKB jap catalogs. I will bet its a sideplated gun.

John:
I think you may be correct.
This would be the first to my knowledge. I am a fan of SKB guns and always check them out when I am out looking.
What would amaze me is to find a side plated one as well. I have only seen box locks.
But I could be wrong.:}
Best,
John

I did not see the gun, but a friend that works in a fine gun room called last week to ask if I knew of a sidelock SKB O/U. Guy was in there to sell two SKB's, said he bought them in Japan in the early '70's. One was a boxlock and similar to a 500, the other a sidelock "a tad nicer" than a 600. Paul had looked in all the source information, books and internet and couldn't find one. I'm comfortable in saying Paul can tell the difference between a side lock and a side plate gun. No deal was done, but I told him, should the guy come back, I'll step forward and buy it. Always wanted just one gun NO ONE ever heard of!

This outfit started out making matchlocks in Mito City. It probably predates Parker Bros. and is still going strong. Having PB SO SLE clone at fraction of the cost ain't bad at all.

As a matter of interest---SKB is only 50 or so years younger than Beretta. It is the second oldest continuously operating arms firm in the world.

I'm another SKB fan who's never seen nor heard of a sidelock. The recent Model 485 side by side was sideplated, but not a sidelock. Entirely possible they made them, but as far as I know, no American importer--and that would be either Ithaca, Mitsui, or Guns Unlimited--ever brought any to this country.
