Gentlemen,

Does anybody have any information about the maker C. Hunt? The gun is a SxS, wide rib, sidelock,12 gage pigeon gun, marked london-birmingham.

Thanks,

Max

Brown's "British Gunmakers" vol 2 says:

"C. Hunt and Co. Ltd. 2-6 Vesey St. Birmingham 1907; 2-4 Vesey St. B'ham 190-8-1919"

Very few so marked guns pass through the market, but the name is recognized. Most I have seen or heard of are "middlin'" original quality, but I'd not be surprised to find a best grade gun or a colonial/farmer grade gun. He would, most likely, have supplied whatever a paying customer desired (and had the cash to pay for!).

Rocketman, did you view the pictures of the gun? Gunsamerica # 976895692. The gun has been restocked and the barrels blued. Action is original. I agree the current quality is "middlin". Would you consider this gun, from what little information given to have been built as a best grade? BTW, I am the current custodian of the gun. The engraving got me. I have not decided if it's a keeper.

Regards,

Max

I agree with Rocketman, there can't be too many of these, yet both Galazan and Barnett seem to have one now, and in the past few years I've seen them advertised by Boston Safaris and Bob's Gun Shop in Ohio. Each seems to have largely the same configuration, and close to the same price. Can there be that many C. Hunt pigeon guns? Or are these the same guns being recirculated over and over? The ones I've seen have through lumps on the actions and relatively short barrels (27"+). I couldn't find any references in my various English databases. Keith

ZZ, interesting to see the C. Hunt listed at Galazan. That is definitely not my gun, but very close configuration. My gun is the one listed by Barnett, however, I got it from Thad Scott at a considerably better price. Maybe, Hunt specialized in this type of live bird gun?

Best,

Max

Hunt, Betts, and some others were the "pigeon gun guys" in Birmingham. Ironic because live pigeon shooting (from traps) was banned in Britain in the early 1900s.

Guys, thanks for the information.

Erik, I do not believe "live bird" shooting is legal here, but I have heard that some still do.

Regards,

Max
