The CAS was likely not shooting heavy loads. Especially with leading in the cone, sounds as if he may have been using "Too Hard" of bullets. A lead bullet too hard for the load will not "Bump-Up" & seal the bore allowing gas cutting. I forget the exact number now but general rule for revolvers is to multiply the BHN by 14xx to determine the pressure required to bump-up the base of the bullet. In reverse if you are loading to a pressure level dividing by this number will give the max BHN which will bump-up. Many bullet makers only sell the hard bullets & they're not always best for the loads used by CAS.

Pipes, I can believe that as the lead was beaded up like slag at the beginning of the throat.

One way to solve the leading of revolver and other handgun bores using cast bullets is to use a slower burning powder. The faster burning powders are sometimes burning rather hot. This melts the base of the bullet causing the leading. Good old Hoppes #9 works well with a bronze brush to remove the lead.

Loading Trail Boss right now. Lead didn't build in the throat today after 25 rnds. Unique for awhile but a bit put off after I discovered double charge with my Duracell battery powder cop. Also some Nitro 100 and RD and of course they are the essence of brissance. Got plenty of ScotchBrite of all grades; bronze wool at the TruValue; Chore Boy at the grocery. Again thanks for sharing notes.
