While we're having this lively discussion on Belgian makers, tell me about Jean Van Maele- Supplier To The King Of Serbia...MDC

All of my sources are dry.

Little Gun has a new link up for this maker, but Alan apparently hasn't finished the page yet as the link errors out. (I have his site archived and that link wasn't there before.)

Jean-Marie Sorriaux's draws a complete blank.

Hopefully some one will have a better source(s) for you. If all else fails, you can ask Alan directly. He has several top researchers in Belgium feeding his site.

Speaking of "Jean" have you any idea of "Jean Brevil" of French origin?

Perhaps this man was not a gun maker, but a merchant that sold other's guns.
His name is interesting. The Jean would indicate a French speaking Belgian origin and the Van would indicate a Flemish speaking area.
Determining the origin of a gun is sometimes fraught with frustration, but can be great fun as well.
This is a name that is new to me and I hope all is soon revealed.:}
Best,
John

John: He could very well be a retailer,as I said the barrel is inscribed (in French) "Supplier (as opposed to maker) To The King Of Serbia".. Thanks...MDC

Heer's "New Stockel" list him as a gunmaker in Brussels circa 1870-1880.

Good on you Michael.
But I wonder if this one reference is enough to really peg this man as a maker.
Is it not unusual for a gun maker with a small shop to build hand and long guns.
Best,
John

Thanks for trying, everyone, but this gun appears to be much later than 1880, Looks more like 1920s or so, but I could be wrong,, It;s a boxlock ejector, fancy back, with assisted opening..MDC

M D et al:
This could be a case much like Carl Stiegele in Germany.
He was a master gun maker for a time and was the gun make for the King of Bavaria. Built some wonderful guns.
He evolved into a store that sold others guns and sporting goods for Africa bound hunters.
His form has now evolved into a safari outfitting concern.
From what has been posted, I think this might be our answer to the Maele question.
Best,
John
