I have a F grade Lefever with damascus barrels circa 1890. If holding the gun in your hands the barrels look really nice(no rust visible). I recently took some ultra close up pics using 2-250 watt work lights. What showed up was some rust spots that I had never noticed before. SO, my question is, are these spots something that should be dealt with and how can I do this, or is keeping it cleaned and stored in a safe adequate so nothing further happens. I am not extremely knowledgable about Damascus and would rather leave it alone compared to the chance of doing any harm. I had heard of some thing to do but thought I would ask here before trying anything.

If it were mine, I'd rub it down with 0000 steel wool saturated with Hoppe's #9 or Clensoil.

0000 steel wool and KleenBore Formula 3 Gun Conditioner works well, and you might even get more contrast in the damascus pattern. Just start with a small patch of brl under the forend.

Thank you; I was wondering how much pressure to apply. Like I mentioned. you can't see rust by looking at it. I did as as both of you mentioned using clensoil. I applied only very light pressure. There was some grime/discoloration on the rag I used to wipe the excess off, not alot but some. The barrels look pretty much the same. I will look at the barrels tomorrow under other lighting and take some more closeups. Thanks again
