I'm just guessing that the German Merkel workers aren't going to be inspired by this acquisition of their company to increase quality of the guns.

Even with threats of beheadings? Poor bastards, just a few years out from behind the wall too.

They are both just assembly line shotguns. I prefer Beretta but that is my eyes telling me the Beretta is better looking. My mind tells me that either one could be a shining star or problem child. I would find out which one has the best dealer reputation in your area, weigh the price difference and see which makes good sense to you. I am sure you will make the best choice for you.
Good luck,
Ron

As one who has to wait on hold for over 45 min to order Beretta parts, I know their service simply isn't! Their cooporate attitude is one which also leaves much to be desired.

Regarding Merkel, from a gunsmiths point of view they are well engineered and designed, typically Teutonic. I do like the Greener crossbolt as well as the double underbite. Unfortunately I too think the change in ownership may well be simply another example of the rich buying a good company to milk it dry.

Merry Christmas to one and all. Dr. Bill

For me.......neither. The Merkel is probably the better gun, but if I were going to buy a Merkel, it would be an older one. Then you would probably have the better gun. The new Merkels remind me of a Baikal. Sturdy but rough and crude. If I were to buy a new Beretta and had problems, I would just take it to Jaqua's and let them handle it. They are one of the bigger dealers in my area. I have two 686 Beretta trap guns which have about 20K rounds through each of them without a hitch. You probably won't put that many rounds through a hunting gun in a lifetime.

The simple act of opening and closing a Merkel can be a beast.
They need to polish-up their innards.

Dear Lowell Glenthorne
what do you mean? Do you have a doubt about its internal finish?
Is it from your own practice?

The internals on Merkels are very well finished. They are very stiff when new but loosen up with shooting.
