This appears to be a Meiji 1880+ Japanese 20 ga shotgun. The other Meiji I have seen are all rifles. They were made up to WW2. This one is encrusted with multi-colored gold. Has anyone any knowledge on these? I'll post 3 photos.

Pete the last two are the same photo. Why would a shotgun need a rear sight?

Mike, #2 & #3 are not the same photos. One shows the sight (clueless as to why it's there), the other doesn't. The gun reminds me of some of the Galazan Fox gold inlay work; fit for a Chinese potentate.

Did not that gun start life as an 11mm Murata rifle?

The 11mm x 60 (I think that was what it started as) came out in 1880 by Murata, but it was made until WW2 so that is a lot of time for a lot of variations. However, it could have been modified. I cannot find any markings except a serial number. The gold work goes all the way down the barrel.

I've got 3 of them from my travels. They were made around the 1910 era according to the locals. Mine are very plane jane by comparison to what you have. All 3 have the rifle like sites too.

The 20 ga and 28ga both have 34" bbls.
The 9mm shotgun has a much nicer stock w/ checkering but still, nothing like that. All work on the same principle/action as the Murata rifles. They were just scaled up/down.

The Gold work is Damascening, where the gold is applied to the surface rather than inlaid. When I visited Ken Hunt in London he told me his Damascene work was inspired by studying japanese work.
After he told me this I went to Japan and met some craftspeople doing this amazing work.
Here are some photos:
