I am helping someone to see a Win Model 23 on this board. I am curious as to the lack of interest in it. I admit, I don't know a lot about the Winchester shotguns, can anyone give me some insight as to why there is not a great deal of genuine interest in this particular gun? I am trying to advise the owner and have no clue what to tell them. Thanks in advance, Steve http://doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=86177&page=2#Post86177

Steve-
I am a person who is interested in Winchester 21's and 23's. I would be in the market for this type of gun. However, the price seems to be above the "inflated Gunbroker" price for a somewhat standard 12 ga. "made in Japan" 23. The small bore 23's sell fairly well since there are few 21 small bores around but this, in my opinion, is very above averaged price for a standard 12 ga. gun.

Steve,
I own three M23's, including a 20ga Pigeon and two 12ga Classics. They are nice guns and I would probably sell my 20 for the asking price...I only paid $750 for it! I believer there is an inflated view of the guns value, but that is good for me, I guess. Great guns to shoot. Mine has killed many pheasant, quail, geese, and dove.
good luck!

First, thank you for your responses. If this is too high, what is just right for a new in the box gun? If it is priced too high, I need to tell these folks that they can own it forever or price it right.

I have inherited a model 23, like the one in the picture but gave it a oil finish, which improved the stock a lot. I have no use for it, and tried to sell it, but only had a ridiculous low offer from a buyer in the UK. I though about sending it to the US, but I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble I'll have with paperwork. If you think they are hard to sell in the US, you should see here... no one shows even a remote interest on such a heavy and short barreled gun.

Steve, I started to answer and chickened out the first time. As has been stated the price is probably the distraction. My older blue book had the $2000 dollar mark with deduction of $150 for the fixed chokes. The gun is a very sturdy work horse. Hope your friends have good luck. Best, Ron

Steve, that is a very nice 12 gauge Model 23, however, as Model 23s go, it is not the most sought after version. Price it at about $2000, or so, and it may sell. If they can't live with that, then they just as well start using it cause they may own it for a long time.

Steve, I looked at the ad you posted, however, not at the 23. I noticed the Weatherby Athena V at $2500.
Gunbroker, and other sites, are awash in these guns, some NIB, at $1600-2000, with nary a single bid.
My thought was your friend had his guns priced at beyond high retail.
Best, Ted

I think it should be priced about $1800, but that is only an opinion.

Steve:
Hard to get interest when items are vastly over priced.
