I hesitate to ask such a basic question of this group but please humor me.

I am refinishing a pretty stock that was sanded and shot without finish at the comb and grip. I took off the old poly something finish with a chemical remover but the stock is not uniform in color. The parts which were held/cheeked have a kind of gray cast. I intend to sand it a bit but should I do something else to the wood? Should I use some cleaner or other solvent before I begin to put on my oil finish?
Thanks for any help. Jake

Assuming the gray cast is skin oils and crud, regular household ammonia works well. Ammonia mixed with oils creates a soap and soap rinses off easily with hot water. Scrub it well with a scrub brush, rinse well and dry thoroughly. One stock I did this winter took ammonia, denatured alcohol, laquer thinner, and some judicious heating in a microwave while wrapped in toilet paper to remove the oil and dirt. Go easy on low power if you try the microwave method, I had a forend split lengthwise once, and it wasn't super hot when it split.
