They were available for a few years after they were discontinued to clean up parts-roughly 40,000 were built. I was told by a somewhat reliable source that they turned up new at dealers into the early 1940s, almost a decade after being officially discontinued. If you are buying a model 17, make sure you check to see if the gun will drop it's hammer when holding the trigger back while completing the forward movement of the action. The gun is designed NOT to, but, dirt (mostly) and wear do take their toll. A few I've seen will drop the hammer AFTER the trigger is released. Plan on a deep down strip and clean if the gun is discovered to be in this condition. Parts are an issue, and don't plan on borrowing them from Ithaca 37s-most of them are just different enough not to work on the 17. Chris Hyde at Vintage sporting has a spare plain 26" modified barrel on hand, he wants $225 or so, not bad if you need one. All this talk of 17s might make me drag my old soldier out. I have a two barrel set also ('sort of) with a 21" Stan Baker choked original and a 26" modified bought off of Ebay, or, someplace. My first repeater, and one that was too good to let get away, thankfully. I should check the headspace on the spare barrel I bought, but, haven't had time to use the gun with it installed, anyway. Good luck, and let us know how it goes. Best, Ted

I have a Model 17 with a plain 26" barrel stamped Imp Cyl. It's sub 6 pound gun and a little whippy on the skeet field but a very pleasant gun to carry for any amount of time. The Rem 17 is a great little vintage gun. Buy it.

I have spotted a nice origianl(looking to me)model 17.what else do i need to look at before i start my haggling? Purchase price was 225.00......so what do you'll think? Battle: 17's are really cool. They're even a bit more streamlined and svelte than a 20 ga. M37, which is an appealing gun also. Does the gun you're looking at have a plain or solid rib? I think the early ones came with a plain buttstock and ringtail forend, late ones sometimes came with a checkered grip and forend. If Tim Frazier checks in, Tim is up-to-speed on all the variations. If I were you I'd grab that gun. Awhile back, someone posted a pic of a graded 17. Bill

Mr. Hurst, Get good archival photos of that one. I'd rather have your artistic interpretation of that grade than the actual mess shown above.
On a related note, do you need the whole gun or just buggered screws? My Tobin has three or four that could use some work. Best, Ted

Thanks for the offer Mr. Ken I'll see if I get around to it on my other one.
I have an extra 26" barrel, plain, CYL if anyone is interested.Bore is good, no pits, outside is silver & plum, minor dings but nothing that shows in the bore. I'll take care of Dave.
Rob

Mr's. Ted & Rob ---- remove screws. Have any buggered screws welded over and re-groved as per original. Send screws to me and I'll cut them. I don't need anything more than the screws. Be sure to includea letter with inventory of screws, your name & home address and ph. number. Ken

Mr. Ted --- if you are interested in this pattern, hows about you saving it ? My computer is so full of pictures & stuff, it takes forever to download anything anymore. I'm told there is something we can do to help but will have to wait until a computer savy guy come along to correct the problem. I will be able to follow the basic Rem. layout and still be able to up-grade/improve on it for you. Ken
