This is a follow up question to my post yesterday seeking help identifying my newest acquisition, a Belgian SxS. See my post from yesterday for pictures. Anyway, this ol gal is chambered 12 Ga. - 65 mm. I had planned on using Magtech brass 2 1/2" cases or Federal paper hulls, but they are tight in the chamber -- I mean tight. The gun will close, but you have to dig the hulls out. I also tried some Winchester AA Featherlites, and they seemed fine. I used my Lilse bore hone on the chambers to polish them out and things are improved, but not the way I'd like it. I'm open to your suggestions.

Assuming the gun and the chambers are in good condition, I'd just shoot short 12's in plastic hulls from outfits like RST, Gamebore, Armusa, etc. If you reload, just cut down some plastic Win AA's and have at it. This sounds like one of those situations where it ain't really broke, so don't try to fix it.

Where on the hulls is the chamber too tight? I have seen chambers on some European hammer doubles that were tapered more than USA chamber gauges, resulting in gauge giving much too short indication of chamber length -- I have two such 12s and one 16. I also once had a cheap USA double that had inadequately deep cut for rim on one chamber.

Niklas Seems to be tight on the last 1/4" or so as I chamber the shell, like the chamber was tapering down as you went down the bore. It is definitely 65mm chambers. There is a slight wobble , indicating it could stand to be put back on face, and there is slight pitting in the left chamber, but it looks very good all in all.

oscarlevel: Yeah, try Gamebore, Polywad( http://www.polywad.com ) or RST. I've shoot several "tight" dimensioned Germanic 65mm doubles and I haven't had any issues with RST. Now and then a Polywad "Vintager" round is a little tight going in, but not coming out. Some of the previous "Vintager" cartridges had higher brass than the current versions. Kind Regards, Riamey rse

I've taken your suggestion this morning and loaded some AA Featherlite Hulls that I've cut down by about 3/8" or so. Loaded with 45 gr. of FFG, Clays Wad (equivalent to the old Win Red Wad), an overshot card and Roll Crimp. Will try it out tomorrow and report back. I take heart in knowing that this ol gal carries nitro proofs and BP proofs that date to mid 1920's, so I figure I'll be more than safe with these loads.
