Savage made cased sets with a 410 barrel or a 410 barrel could be purchesed from them. On gunbroker there is a takedown barrel for a model 99 with the A.O. Niedner roll mark on it.

I saw it and wondered if maybe Niedner may have ever made a custom model 99 for some one and the barrel was separated from the set. Then I thought if anyone might know the answer, it might be someone here.

Is it odd to see a Niedner shotgun barrel?

I have never encountered a shotgun barrel by Niedner. The stamp and the number 193 are consistent with each other and I don’t have a 193 in my data base. I’ve seen very few Savage 99’s out of the Niedner shop.

Mark is Whelen’s 99 Take-down, now soldered in place, a Niedner barrel? If so what is the barrel number?

I know that Niedner made a 38-55 shotgun barrel for a Maynard but that’s the end of my knowledge on Niedner and shotguns.

MK, are you a relation of TW? If not is there a good story about how you came by the shirt?

Do you know what happened to the gun?

Whelen 1899 has Dowagiac barrel, no. 422 underneath with the 4 laying on its side as tho stamp had been turned 90 degrees. Fringed shirt came from Whelen's grandson. We do not, alas, have the cap. We got four rifles from grandson, three from Creighton Audette to whom Whelen had given them. Subsequently have acquired two more. All are guns illustrated in "Mr. Rifleman".

Thanks Mark,
When I saw a Savage-99 take-down barrel made by Niedner I had to ask. Over the years I've made a note of when and who has Whelen guns, most of them are accounted for and he had a lot. The last two that have come across my radar were the Linden-1903 and the little over-under he carried in Panama.

For years I have been under the impression that the Niedner .250 barrel on the 99 (which is ser. no. 123811 from 1912) was soldered in place. But in "Mr. Rifleman" Whelen says only that it was "screwed in solid". I asked Russell Gilmore to look, he says there is no evidence of solder at the barrel/receiver jointure - not that anything would show, I suppose, if Niedner did the job. Still, I will stop saying it was soldered. Given due consideration, it does seem like a messy way for two people as sophisticated as Whelen and Niedner to handle that problem. Another point to be made is that in "Mr. Rifleman" Whelen says "Niedner's date on the underside of the barrel is 4-22". Russell says there is no dash between the 4 (which lays horizontally as I have mentioned) and the 22. Maybe Michael can tell us, if it is indeed a Niedner barrel number, the approximate date of manufacture. And also, the date for no. 193, the .410 barrel.
