"Withstood" is not the same as "passing" proof. I doubt the test was performed in any proof house, and I highly doubt the Winchester barrel would have passed view or measurment after the test.

You might be right, Ted. I don't have the original Winchester information on the Model 59 barrel, but Gough Thomas--who likes the idea, interestingly for a conservative Englishman--comments as follows: "It is stated to have TWO TO THREE TIMES the strength of conventional steel barrels, and to withstand plugging tests no steel barrel would survive." I've seen plenty of cracked receivers on Model 59's, but never a bulged or blown barrel. Anyone?

Out of curiosity this gun has just come back from re-proof for nitro. Same test as modern definitive proof. This is all that is required:

The firing pins are struck by small copper hammers on some sort of cradle. It is a Charles Smith of Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire and is a 12 bore with damascus barrels. It passed o.k. Now to put the thing back together after browning the barrel and blacking some other parts. Lagopus.....

Ted & Larry;
This was of course many years ago & am operating strictly on memory. As I recall though the model 59 bbls so tested were reported as totally unharmed, ie not only did they not Burst, they likewise were not bulged or no other notable damage occured. No, it was not done in an official proof house but would seem as if they would have "Passed". My recollection of the account totally fits with the info Larry has supplied.
