Can old hard rubber recoil pads be softened before mounting?

I have a 90 year old Jostam Anti-Flinch. Very Hard.

Perhaps soaking in oil?

What oil?

How long?

Thank you

I would say no, especially in oil / anything else. Over time (90 years) its vulcanized, cured into that "hard" state. --- John Can.

Lacquer thinner will soften it, but may also cause it to swell slightly. The softening effect will last even after the thinner has completely evaporated. Lacquer thinner is often used to soften feed rollers on old computer printers so that the rollers will grip the paper. Long term effects on the rubber are probably questionable, but this pad is already past its prime.

Back in the day I did quite a bit of restoration work on classic/vintage cars. We used brake fluid on hard rubber parts, also auto trans conditioner. Both worked, but the rubber never got as soft as new. Never tried it on a recoil pad. Another product I've seen but never used is Rubber Renue. Made by http://www.mgchemicals.com.
