Hello, I was wondering if anyone has a solution to the loose fore-end iron on my Beretta BL-4. The threaded inserts seem to be "pulling through" the fore-end wood, thus I can't tighten the screws as much as they need... the fore-end kind of "wiggles" fore and aft as I shoot, break open the gun, etc. Any ideas? I've already reset these using Acraglas...

Thanks,
Hap

For that to happen someone must have let oil get under the F/E iron and soak into the wood around the screws. You might try drilling out the nut holes slightly to see if you can get into good, clean wood, then try the Acraglass again, marring the walls of the holes a bit to give the Acraglass a better hold.

If that doesn't work, I'd prolly try to find a replacement F/E at a good price.

If that didn't work out, I'd probably remove the inset nuts, drill a 1/2" hole around the existing holes, epoxy in a piece of dense walnut dowell (might have to make it) and sand and stain, then drill the screw holes and inset holes and reset the nuts, then refinish and rechecker.

Another option would be to make larger inset nuts, assuming you could find a threading die to match the existing screws, or go to new, larger nuts and new, larger screws. While the dowells sound like a good bit of work, I think they'd be less than making new nuts etc. and prolly look better.

Good luck, these are great, old guns that are certainly worth the effort.

Hap, if you have to drill and replace with walnut dowel you might try this sitea: http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=667
I bought some from them to repair a buttstock some butth--- put pad on using coarse flathead screws. Worked great! Make drilling it out the last resort!

Hap,
You might think about a variation on Cush's suggestion. Remove the insert nuts, drill thru the forend with a drill a little smaller than the insert nut diameter, taking care not to enlarge the hole for the insert nut. Get a walnut dowel a little bigger than the hole you drilled, cut off a piece about an inch long, put it in an electric drill or your lathe if you have one, and sand it to fit the hole you drilled. Cut off the appropriate length you need and glue it in below the surface enough to allow for the lenght/depth of the insert nut. When it dries, drill the clearance hole for the screw to pass thru and glue in the insert nut. You'll be crushing against endgrain of the dowel and it'll resist crushing much better.
