When used with the plastic wads, will a cutts choke tube give a tighter or looser pattern than what is marked on the tube??
Thanks

Tighter. I have patterned "spreader" Cutts tubes in .410, 20, and 12. In .410 I got the same patterns I see with my pre-64 M42s choked mod. In 20s the Cutts patterns approximated those I get from .008 to .010 (IC to WS2) barrels. In the 12 its pretty close to what I get from .008 WS1s or IC.

I'll second that. I have a Win Model 42 with a Cutts and a spreader choke. It patterns the same as a friend's M42 mod.

How exactly can a 12 gauge Cutts spreader throw a pattern like an improved cylinder when you can fit your mother in law's leg through the choke tube? Maybe all of Colonel Cutts' hype was true. However, I doubt it. Sam knows a trainload about shotguns, but I question his results on the 12 gauge Cutts spreader tube.

Bill,
Spreader tubes for all gauges have bigger "mouth" diameters vs bore diameter. The muzzle end of the 12 ga tube is large even in relative terms. But its still alot smaller than the diameter of the 12 ga expansion chamber. The difference - what the shot column sees - is what matters.
Your perception that the 12 ga spreader produces less nominal choke vs small gauges is right on, and instructive. The NSSA legal 12 ga payload yields adequate 21 yd pellet density using very little choke. So while the .410 spreader approximates mod, it works down from there to about like Winchester's idea of IC when you get to the 12. I can't distinguish Win 12 ga IC from their WS1......maybe at the acquisition price level. Briley's definitions of choke are pretty generally accepted nowadays. Their 12 ga IC is .010 - a bit more than WW's - and it shows.
Clearly, Colonel Cutts understood optimal skeet patterns, by gauge. The term "spreader" here is misleading and has nothing in common with the same term applied to spreader loads. If anything Cutts spreaders tighten things up compared with other period skeet choke designs.

Ahh,thanks,I had that feeling when I slipped in the MOD choke and skeet scores dropped a bit.I have been using the spreader, but I blamed it alot on station 4 for being too open. Then,in theory,if I use a brushwad or clip off the wad petals,I should get closer results for what its marked for?

Hello Spreader will work FINE for station 4, lead the target by 6 more inches and you will be amazed.
As for my 28 gauge Remington 1100 with a cutts, I was getting too tight of patterns with the spreader choke so I put on 20 gauge (yes 20 gauge) spreader and GREAT what a difference Mike

If you use the Cutts spreader choke in your 12 gauge, you won't have to mess with your wads to get an open pattern. Your pattern through the Cutts spreader will be about as open as you could wish for. OK, some day I'll throw some patterns to prove what I am gushing about. So far, all I've done is shoot tens of thousands of shells at skeet birds through Cutts guns with good results. To be honest, I agree with Sam on the .410 Cutts spreader patterns. They are tight.

Does the same apply (tighter) when using a polychoke?? Don't mean to change the topic. I have a Rem 17 (20) and an early 870 (12)and both have a pickle on the end. They shoot great, seem to follow the choke designation on the unit. But, then again, I have never patterned them, just from the performance on the skeet and trap range. Randy

Ha,I did not know the various cutts tubes are on the same thread?
also,My spreader doesnt have a trumpet flare on the end, like some Ive seen, mine just has a short truncated finial style. Is this correct,or has it been sliced?
thanks!

Hello Please tell us what the identifying markings are on the choke tube, are they Spdr, IC, Mod, Full, Superfull, or a three digit number, or ?? The 12 gauge trumpet choke is the speader and a loaded 12 gauge shell should drop down inside the choke tube to be caught on the rim. Of course, remove it BEFORE shooting Let us know soon Mike

Speaking of Cutts tubes, I need some 16 gauge ones, anybody have any? Anything but full, any other choke.

Destry you probably already know this but you can take a full Cutts and cut it off to different lengths to get different chokes.
Best,
Mike
