My buddy picked up an Ithaca 12ga Model 400 side-by-side SST and AE SK both barrels "Handcrafted by SKB." He doesn't know what it is and neither do I. Help, please.

King: I can't find a Model 400 but Ithaca imported many SKB shotguns with their name on them back in the 1970s. These were very modestly priced guns in both side by side and over/under configurations that were made for Ithaca in Japan. Jim

There was a recent discussion about the SKB 400 on this or another board. I think Larry Brown has some info.

I used to own one. The Ithaca/SKB 400 and the Model 480 (480's have a straight grip and a slimmer beavertail forend than the 400's) were SKB's top-of-the-line side-by-sides imported by Ithaca c. the mid to late 70's. Back in the day, the line up of SKB S X S's were the Model 100, 150, 200, 280, 400 and 480. Later guns were then imported by a couple of different importers and a Model 300 was added to the line.

In the 1966 to 1970 Ithaca catalogues the SKB side by side offereings are 100, 200E and 200E Skeet. By 1971 the 280 with a straight grip is added to the line. In 1972 the 150 was added to the line and gone by 1975. Thru 1977 the line remains 100, 200E, 200E Skeet and 280. I don't have an Ithaca catalogue for 1978. Then in 1979 Ithaca had greatly expanded their SKB line with the 300 and 400 Fields, the 100 and 200 Magnum for 12-gauge 3-inch, the 480 English, and the 400 Skeet. Then by the 1980-1981 Ithaca Catalogue the SKB line is gone. Here are a couple of pages from the 1979 Ithaca Catalogue --

Thank you, all hands. My buddy's in original box, paid $CAN1400. It's the tonic he needs, beating cancer carrying the bag.
