I am looking for nitro loads for 2-1/2" 28 gauge plastic shells.
I have a nice little English 28 gauge boxlock coming. It is nitro proofed for 5/8" loads. From Major Burrard I have black powder recipes for 9/16 oz (1-3/4 drams) and 5/8 oz (1-7/8 drams) but of course I can't get the English nitro powder they made 80 years ago. I want to use the nitro card, waxed fiber wads, and roll crimp with the nitro recipe.
Thanks!
Mike

I have a 4 3/4 pound Francotte Knockabout ejector 28 that is uncomfortable to shoot with standard 1200 fps 3/4 ounce loads. I cut the shot load back to just over 1/2 ounce, fill the shell with a fiber wad and the resulting shell sounds good, breaks clay birds well, and does not recoil. Although my gun has 65 mm chambers, I do not cut my hulls. I'm sure the pressure is quite low and does no damage to the gun.

I have a bunch of STS hulls that have been reloaded several times and are burned and stiff around the crimp area. I cut them back and bought a 2 1/2" kit (around $30 for my 600jr). I get good crimps except the ridge around the crimp is wavy. I spoke to MEC and they said since there is no crimp memory that is what happens unless I skive the crimp area and make it thinner or I can just accept the waviness since it won't affect the shooting.
I load 9/16 oz. of # 8 since 5/8 fills the wad too much. I am using Unique(13.5g) on Eightbore's recommendation. I have made a dozen to try but have not had time to shoot it yet.
Standard reloads and off the shelf shells are too strong for my five pound simson hammer gun. Estates show primer flow and both have too much kick.
I am using Duster 2834 red wads and Rem 209's and the pressure is pretty low for this gauge.
I will report the results as soon as I have a chance to shoot it.
So many guns, so little time!

I use Unique 12 1/2 gr 3/4 oz Rem Wad in Chedite 2 1/2 hull. Roll crimped. Seems to shoot with low recoil in my 28. The other wads I tried did not give enough room for good crimp. I guess you could build the load without plastic wad.

Dwight,
Any idea what pressure your load generates?

NO, In a discussion about 28 ga reloading not long ago, Jim Legg mentioned that he used 12 1/2 Unique and that Unique burned cooler. Seems low recoil to me and shoots fine. I got another hammer 28 this summer that is nitro proofed and shoot black in my other 28. Going to try it out on some quail soon.

Thanks for getting back to me Dwight.
I shot ten shells at skeet (that is all I made for testing, see above post for load) and they shot well with little recoil. It is a hammer gun with 29 1/2" barrels. The only thing that seemed odd is how loud the gun was. The two other guys I was shooting with noticed that too and commented on it. No idea what that could mean except maybe too much powder for 9/16 Oz. of shot.

I have noticed some subsonic shells are louder than regular ones.

My experience with Longshot in low pressure 7/8 ounce 16 gauge shells is that it is very loud and, like builder, my shooting companions noticed.
Best,
Mike
