I checked some other resources. Nothing I have goes into any depth about this maker. All list several Barr's in New York City circa 1850...

The census records do not show him. There is a Richard Barr in the 1857 New York City directory at 106 Beekman who is listed as a gunsmith.

Pete, thank you, I kept suspecting he was an American maker.

You describe the pair I did well. The twists were about an inch wide and flat. The inner parts were like flowing rather than wire twist. I believe this was a fine gun as the London twist on the top rib was scribed in gold and a thin line of gold was next to the top rib and tube for the full length. I did not see the rest of the gun. Now I wish I had pictures of them. They were far from my finest so I didn't bother. My friend who I did them for was very happy but in my head I have done much better.

This is my first post and I came here to get information on browning Damascus barrels such as these. They look gorgeous. I have a set from a Belgian percussion double that I'd like to see look even close to those. Can you give me additional info/links/instructions on the formulas you mentioned?
Thanks very much,
Tom
