Lipstick on a pig can't hide the mass-produced look. Move the decimal point one place to the left and it might be worth a second glance. Regards, Joe

Robert Runge and Carlton Ennis would be turning over in their graves about now.

Steve Barnett just sold a "D" grade for about $10,000, it is amazing what the 40X Sporter's are going for. Ungraded guns are between $5000 and $6000.

Some people have a lot more money than sense. But, it's their money.
I well remember the old saying about a fool and his money so I wish Steve lotsa luck with these idiots, he needs to work quickly before someone else discovers their sense/wealth ratio. Regards, Joe

Joe What makes the 40x look mass produced. I am under the impression they are built from hand picked parts and individualy built. I have one that has spent a lot of time on the bench. It is exactly like it left Remington. My problem was not the rifle but the caliber. .222 won't hold up with the 6mm ppc. 40X better looking rifle than my early 700 BDL varmint. As a target gun the Remingtons are light years ahead of Mausers and springfields for many reasons. And yes there are some pretty Remingtons. All this from some one who likes Jap rifles for a lot of the same reasons. Tom

I wish Remington could have figured out something better to do with the magazine hardware. I also think Runge and Ennis would have at least improved on the quality of the extensive stippling. How about that grip cap and buttplate? To be fair, I just sold an Ennis engraved E Grade Model 141 with an aluminum buttplate in natural finish and a grooved forend. Of course, the selling price was a bit under $18,000. The Remington Custom Shop must be a crazy place to work.

Bought my first 40X in '69 or '70 IIRC, one of the special 40XB-BR models made to just barely meet the LV weight break. Mighty fine shooter indeed with 60-gr bullets. Also helped to build a custom 40X 22LR repeater using a Ruger 10/22 rotary magazine, a friend still has it. One of my 'benchmark' test rifles is a 40X custom 22LR sporter belonging to another friend, he lets me borrow it for use as a benchmark check on the shooter's (my) performance on testing day. The accuracy levels of the rifles are much appreciated by me but they're still mass-produced and it shows.
Would have been relatively easy to incorporate a simple 1-piece steel milled TG resembling the Mauser RF sporter or Winchester 52 stamped ones, using a Remington-marked magazine of course. Instead of the cheap-looking garbage they did use. What a waste!
For those prices I can get a bespoke custom from my choice of fine makers and still have plenty left over for LOTS better engraving. But it's their money. Regards, Joe

Joe I remember somewhere some time some one was using the 6.5 Jap trigger guards for custom rifls as they are hinged.7,7 is hinges but it is stamped. The 40X is acurate for a reason. It is well designed and mostly hand fit. Mine is a single shot so i'm not concerned about a magazine. If i need more than one shot i will take the BM59. I do want to pretty up the 600 though. There are steel trigger guards out there for it. I have not had a rimfire 40X my 22 is a Martini Mk ll Int. that I got from your friend Thad Scott Long ago. Respect your Insight my friend Tom
