I would have bought it and had pics if it were small bore. I guess I forgot to say it is a 12. Story really isn't that "weird" IMO. I don't have a connection to the gun so it doesn't really matter to me. Just thought it was a high condition, american double with some different options (BTFE, SST) on a "field grade" Fox that someone might have an interest in. I guess maybe the weird part would be that I ran into the same gun at two different places. But if you go to the shows around here, you see ALOT of the same guns!

I have forwarded the dealer's info to some members at their request, so maybe they will call and be able to add some much needed info.

Bamboozler, I'm afraid I didn't notice wich way the barrels were marked, but I will try to find out tomorrow when they open up. Any other questions to ask?

Early Sterlingworth's were not that much different from A grades. Less engraving and black instead of english walnut. But the engraving o the early A grades is more or less minimal at best. Some one needs to call the shop and offer them a grand an buy the gun. Unless it is a basket case it is well worth the money.

In addition to the type of barrel steel you could ask what the serial number of the gun is and is this serial number exactly the same on the barrels, trigger guard and forend. If the serial number falls between 7500 and 35280 it's an AE-Grade, if the serial number falls between 53800 and 161556 it's a Sterlingworth Ejector. In an earlier post you mentioned you had 2 early A-Grades and this "Sterlingworth" has the exact same engraving as your A's. Early A's and Sterlingworths were both border engraved---but not in the same style. I, and others here suspect that what you think, or perhaps what the dealer has marked as a Sterlingworth, is really an AE-Grade. You may want to go to www.foxcollectors.com to gain further understanding.

Serial number is 79,??? and they matched barrels, forend and guard. I'll get exact serial number tomorrow. It said sterlingworth on the receiver - right where the A.H. Fox is on my A-grades. I thought engraving was the same, by that I mean light engraving around the borders and some "starburst like pattern", screws were done etc. It definetly wasn't a pin gun either. I thought I had read about there being a couple of versions of the sterlingworth - maybe field(?) and deluxe(?). Maybe tomorrow will bring answers...

I called the shop this morning, hoping I was about to buy another Sterly. Not going to happen for me, because the B/T f/e does not match the PG stock. Stock has coarse flat-top checkering, but B/T has finer pointed checkering. S/N is 73,680. Stock is capped PG. I stopped asking questions when we got to the f/e issue. Still, probably a nice shooter for the price.

Lloyd, thanks for posting the info.
