Gentlemen,

Where might I find data for loading spreader loads? I would like to look it over before I buy the wads. I would be using HODGDON CLAYS and 1 oz shot if it is applicable. Thank-you.

The variables are so immense that the best advice I can give is to insert a spreader---I use BP's X-Stream---into a low-pressure load and go to the patterning board.

I have been using clays powder, rem primers, fig 8 wads, with Win or Rem hulls and using the loading data for the 1 1/8 oz. load. I just load one oz. of shot and insert either/or the poly wad or the X-stream. The loads work well on up close targets. The 12g pressures can be kept to 6000 to 8000 PSI. The spreader inserts makes up the difference of the 1/8 oz. of shot very nicely.

Anyone have data for a 3/4 or 7/8 ounce load? Preferably 3/4. I have dropped from 1 1/8 to 1 oz., but would like to go lower for a youth training load.

Judge,
Here is a light load for the young at heart.. Rem 209 primer, PB powder-19.5gr, RemTGT12, 24Gram=7/8 oz(close enough) pressure 4,800PSI at 1155 FPS. For a spreader try Win209, PB 23gr, RemR12L 7/8 oz shot and an X-stream spreader, @1150 FPS and 5000LUP. There are many more in the load books. So far I have found the X-stream or the poly wad spreader displaces 1/8 oz. of shot and works well.

Ron, thanks for the data. What books do you reference for spreader loads?

I will probably raise an eye brow or two with this answer but here goes. I use low pressure loads in the 4000 to 7000PSI range. I lower the shot charge by 1/8 of an oz. and insert a spreader such as poly wad or x-stream. In the past, various writings have led me down this path. I stay away from high pressure loads and and have had no problems for the last four years of using this method. I am sure others can and will come forward with sugestions and corrections. The reloading books all state not to interchange components and they have good reason. I will keep looking for a written statement about the spreaders and will post when I find it.

I use 1 oz spreader BP Xtreme inserts with great success for several years. In 12 ga Ijist subistute a 1 1/8oz wad --- the insert displaces about 1/8 oz of shot. Patterns great. Cheers!
